"EID - UL - FITR"

I begin in the Name of the Almighty Allah (God) the Beneficient, the Most Merciful

"O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you,
in order for you to gain God consciousness"

  [Al-Quran - Chapter 2: verse 183]

The Holy month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Over one billion Muslims all around the world take part in the Fast of Ramadan. During this month, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset everyday. The Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammed (upon whom be peace) during the month of Ramadan, and .........

“Was sent down from heaven, a guidance unto man,
a declaration of direction, and a means of Salvation.”

* Fasting in the month of Ramadan is obligatory as it is one of the five pillars of Islam. The five pillars are:

(1) Testifying that there is One God (Allah) and Muhammed is his last Messenger.
(2) The establishment of Salaat (Prayer).
(3) The giving of Zakah (Charity).
(4) Saum (Fasting in the month of Ramadan)
(5) Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca)

Fasting is a time for reflection, devotion to Almighty Allah (God) and self-control. A time to strengthen family relationships and community ties. Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink, smoking and sexual relations are also forbidden during the fasting hours from dawn to sunset. Great emphasis is placed on the reciting and study of the Holy Quran and one must practice patience and honesty at all times. Some things that can destroy the good that is acquired through fasting are slander, backbiting, false promises, theft and dishonesty.

“If one does not abandon falsehood in words and deeds,
Almighty Allah has no need for his abandoning of food and drink”

The sighting of the new moon at the end of Ramadan heralds the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr which takes place on the first day of the tenth Islamic month of Shawwal. Eid-ul-Fitr is a day of thanksgiving to Almighty Allah. A day of rejoicing, a day of giving and sharing as it culminates a month of prayer, sacrifice and spiritual discipline. On Eid Day the celebrations begin with a short prayer after which parents, friends and relatives visit each other, gifts are exchanged and everyone partakes in delicious traditional meals such as sawine, halwa, curried meats and vegetables with roti and rice. Before the Eid prayer, Muslims pay the Sadaqu-tul-fitr (special poor rate). This is a special charity given to their less fortunate brothers and sisters to enable them to celebrate this wonderful occasion. Gifts and meals are also given to the poor and underprivileged in the society, so that they too can enjoy and be part of the giving and sharing that comes with the celebration of Eid. At the end of this Holy month of Ramadan, a Muslim is rewarded with discipline, tolerance, piety and humility.
