"The Merits and Benefits of Fasting"

In Ramadan the gates of the gardens are opened, the gates of the fire are closed:-

“Abu Hurairah reported that the messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said “When Ramadan comes, the gates of the garden are opened, the gates of the fire are closed and the shaitans are chained up.”

(agreed upon)

In a Hadith:-

Uthman Ibn Abil-`Aas relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon
him) said: "Whoever fasts a day in the way of Allah, Allah places
between him and the Fire a trench like that between heavens and the
earth".

[At-Tirmithi and At-Tabarani, Sahih]

Brothers and Sisters in Islam,
There is great merit in fasting! Fasting increases our willpower. It drills and trains our will to avoid desires and to keep away from sinful acts. It also helps us to understand how the poor feel, by means of personal experience (hunger and deprivation). It can be quoted in Al Qur'an:-

“Oh ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you that ye may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious).”
(2:183)

*Al-Muttaqun - the pious believers of Islamic Monotheism who fear Allah much (abstain form all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained).
